listing of the reading and homework
assignments that you are required to do.
In addition, Exam and Final dates will
be listed. Most problems will be worked
in WeBWorK.
For WeBWorK students
will login using their last name with a
capital first letter and their Red ID
number for a password. (Logins
are case sensitive!) For
example, suppose your name is Henri

Manual (MATLAB and Maple) version,
which will continue to be updated over the
semester with detailed information for

Week
13-15:We finish Chapter 10 on Fourier Transforms. There is a Take Home Final, which will be due Thursday, May 12.
There are solutions to Take-Home Exam 2, HW10, and HW11.
HW Assignment #10: 10.3.1, 10.3.5, 10.3.6, 10.4.1, 10.4.3, Computer Problem.
These problem are due Monday, May 9.
Week
11-12: We finish Chapter 8 on Nonhomogeneous problems and may begin Chapter 10 on Fourier Transforms.

For Exam 1,
you are allowed a Scientific
Calculator (no graphing or smart
functions). All Cell phones must
remain out of sight. You may have one
standard sheet of paper with notes.

1: Read Chapters 1 and 2
from the text. The first chapter
introduces Partial Differential
Equations and shows the derivation of
the Heat Equation. The second chapter
shows separation of variables and begins
the process of solving the Heat
Equation.
HW Assignment #1: Work the
WeBWorK Problems, 1.2.9, 1.4.12.
These problem are due Friday,
Jan. 29.
Week
2: Read Chapters 2
and 3 from the text. We continue
techniques of separation of variables
and introduce Fourier series. Computer
code for Maple (heat1d (PDF))
and MatLab (heatjm.m)
are available.

2.3.1(b,c,f), 2.3.8, 2.3.11.

You must do this work on your own
according to the honor code of
SDSU. This Take-Home
Exam should provide a good
basis for study of the In-Class
Exam, which will be on Fri.

8-9: We continue Chapter 7 with higher dimensional PDEs, Bessel's Differential Equation, spherical problems and Legendre polynomials. For those who want more details, there is a link to good notes on the Method of Frobenius needed for solving Bessel's equation. There are Take-Home Exam Solutions available. Also, there are Exam Solutions available.
HW Assignment #8: Work the
WeBWorK Problems, 5.6.1, 5.8.5 (for b numerically find first 5 e.v.s with h = -1 and L = 1), 5.8.8 (for c numerically find first 5 e.v.s), 5.8.11, 7.3.1 (d), 7.3.2a, 7.3.4a, 7.3.5, 7.5.1a, 7.5.2a.
