This page will give a complete listing of the reading and homework assignments that you are required to do. There is a class ranking that can be found through this hyperlink.

Week 1: You should familiarize yourself with this webpage and how to navigate the different sections. Read the lecture sections on Introduction to Differential Equations and Yeast Models. Work the HW Problems for an Introduction to Differential Equations and the Maple Computer problems. These will be due Friday, Feb. 1.

Week 2: Read Chapter 1.1 and 1.2 in the book and the lecture section on Linear Differential Equations. Work the HW Problems for Linear Differential Equations and the problems from the book listed below. These will be due Friday, Feb. 8.
Exercises 1.1 (p. 14): 3, 4, 13, 16, 18
Exercises 1.2 (p. 33): 2, 6, 9, 11, 15, 24, 26, 32, 33, 36, 37

Week 3: Read Chapter 1.3 and 1.4 in the book. Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 1.3 (p. 48): 5, 8, 15 (These are due Friday, Feb. 8.)
Also, work the problems on Euler's method from the web.

Week 4: Read Chapter 1.5 and 1.6 in the book. For more information on Euler's method, you can read my Math 122 Notes on Numerical Differential Equations and can download the special Excel spreadsheet for doing Euler's and Improved Euler's Method (but requires some knowledge about Excel). Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 1.5 (p. 73): 2, 3, 7, 11, 14, 18 (These are due Friday, Feb. 15.)
The problems on Euler's method from the web are due Friday, Feb. 15.

Week 5: Read Chapter 1.7 and 1.8 in the book. The first Exam will be on March 1. The review sheet will become available over the weekend. The Take-Home exam is now available and will be due on Wed. Feb. 27. Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 1.6 (p. 91): 2, 4, 7, 9, 19, 21, 30, 34, 36, 37, 40, 44, 45, 46 (These are due Friday, Feb. 22.)
Exercises 1.7 (p. 107): 2, 3, 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, 24 (These are due Friday, Mar. 1.)
Note the extension because I failed to finish this section in lecture.

Week 6: The first Exam will be on Friday, March 1. A review sheet is available to aid your studying for the exam. Solutions to the review sheet are available. Read Chapter 1.9 in the book. Solutions for the Take Home Exam are available. Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 1.8 (p. 121): 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 14, 23, 26, 29 (These are due Friday, Mar. 1.)

Week 7: The retake of the first Exam will be on Friday, March 8. Do NOT write on the original exam, but rather write your corrections on a separate paper that you stable to the back of the original exam before returning on Friday. Read the material in Chapter 2.1 and 2.2. Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 2.1 (p. 160): 1-6, 8, 10, 15, 20, 22 (These are due Friday, Mar. 8.)

Week 8: You can find a class ranking through this grades hyperlink or the one at the top of the page. Read the material in Chapter 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4. Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 2.2 (p. 178): 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 14, 15, 20 (Maple), 25 (These are due Friday, Mar. 15.)
Exercises 2.3 (p. 192): 7, 9 (Maple), 15 (Maple), 16 (Maple) (These are due Friday, Mar. 15.)

Week 9: Read the material in Chapter 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3. At present, the plan is to have the second Take-Home Exam given out on Mon or Wed. (3/25 or 3/27), then have Exam 2 on the Wed after Spring break (4/10). Alternatives can be discussed in class as this will cramp the time for a third exam. Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 2.4 (p. 205): 1, 4, 7, 10 (These are due Friday, Mar. 22.)
Exercises 3.1 (p. 244): 7, 11 (Maple), 16, 17, 19, 24, 28, 29, 30, 31, 34, 35 (These are due Friday, Mar. 22.)
Exercises 3.2 (p. 263): 1, 4, 7, 8, 11, 14, 16, 17, 21, 24 (These are due Friday, Mar. 22.)

Week 10: The second Take Home exam is available and is due after Spring Break on Monday, April 8. Read the material in Chapter 3.4, 3.5, and 3.6. An Euler 2D spreadsheet in Excel is now available for the example worked in class. There are downloadable m-files for MatLab direction fields (pplane6.m and ppn6out.m). I hope to demonstrate these tools in class, but you are welcome to experiment with them. Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 3.3 (p. 279): 3, 8, 11, 14, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24 (These are due Friday, Mar. 29.)

Exercises 3.6 (p. 328): 2, 5, 9, 12, 15, 16 (These are due Monday, Apr. 8.)

Week 11: Exam 2 will be Wed. April 9 and cover the material in Chapters 2 and 3 that we covered in class. You are allowed a 3x5 index card to help with formulae. The Take Home exam (minus the Euler Problem) is representative of the material likely to be on the exam. In addition, you should be sure that you understand the material in Section 3.7, as one of those problems could be covered on the Exam. The solutions to the Take Home Exam are now available. Work the following Exercises from the book:

Week 13: The third Take-Home exam is available and is due on Wednesday, May 1. There is a minor error on the Take-Home handed out in class. Problem 3 should have -dF(s)/ds on the right hand side of the first equation. Read the material in Chapter 6.3, 6.4, and 6.5 on Laplace transforms. Work the following Exercises from the book:
Exercises 6.2 (p. 561): 2, 5, 6, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 19 (These are due Friday, Apr. 26.)
