Assignment Information

This page will give a complete listing of the reading and homework assignments that you are required to do.

Final's Week: I have posted new class ranking though HW Assignment #7, including all exam scores.Your Final is Dec. 17, Wed. 1-3 PM in GMCS 422 (the Computer Lab). The final have problems that are very similar to the Take-Home (though necessarily shorter). You will be tested on the same concepts with similar examples, using similar code. The Take-Home Final and HW Assignment #9 are due promptly by 5 PM on Monday, Dec. 15, so solutions can be posted at 6 PM. (No credit will be given after 6 PM and there will be no exceptions!) The Solutions to the Take-Home Final are available. Solutions to HW Assignment #7 are available through this hyperlink.

Week 15: I will be in my office during normal office hours and at class time on Wed. to answer any questions or pick up assignments as they get graded. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #14 (Notes #14 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color), Lecture Notes #15 (Notes #15 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color), and Lecture Notes #16 (Notes #16 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). You can pick up your HW 6 in my office at anytime now.Solutions to HW Assignment #5 and Solutions to HW Assignment #6 are available through this hyperlink.

Week 14: Read the material in the text Chapter 7.1-7.3. The HW Assignment #9 is posted and has a due date of Monday, Dec. 15. A Take-Home Final is available and will also be due by Monday, Dec. 15. Your final will be taken in the GMCS 422 Computer Lab on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 13:00-15:00.

Assignments from Earlier: Week 1: Read Chapter 1.1-1.3 from the text. The first chapter reviews Calculus, discusses round-off errors and computer arithmetic, and examines algorithms and convergence. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #01 (Notes #01 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color).

Week 2: Read Chapter 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 from the text. We continue the material from Chapter 1 and begin looking at solutions of equations in one variable. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #02 (Notes #02 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color) and Lecture Notes #02_5 (Notes #02_5 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color).
There is a link to a Study Guide and Programs for the Text. See www.as.ysu.edu/~faires/Numerical-Analysis/. I have glanced at a couple of the algorithms, and they appear to be written very thoroughly. HW Assignment #1 is available through this hyperlink. (For students without a text the problems from Burden and Faires are available here.) These problem are due Wednesday, Sep. 17.

Week 3: Read Chapter 2.1-2.4 from the text. The second chapter studies the equation f(x) = 0. Several techniques are given for numerically solving this equation. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #03 (Notes #03 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). HW Assignment #2 is available through this hyperlink. (For students without a text the problems from Burden and Faires are available here.) These problem are due Wednesday, Sep. 24. The lecture page has links to MatLab codes for many of these techniques.

Week 4: Read Chapter 2.5-2.6 and 3.1 from the text. Several students seemed to be confused about when Homework was due (despite the listing below). There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #04 (Notes #04 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). The official policy for the remainder of the semester is that Homework is due by 4 PM on the day listed (usually a Wed.). After that you can receive 50% until 4 PM on Friday with no credit for any Homework later than Friday. HW Assignment #3 is available through this hyperlink. These problem are due Wednesday, Oct. 1. The lecture page has links to MatLab codes for many of these techniques.

Week 5: Read Chapter 3.1-3.4 from the text. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #05 (Notes #05 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). Solutions to HW Assignment #1 are available through this hyperlink. (There are additional links to a bisection program and LaTeX file.) HW Assignment #4 is available through this hyperlink. These problem are due Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Week 6: Read Chapter 3.4 (Cubic splines), 4.1 (Numerical differentiation), 4.2 (Ricardson's extrapolation) from the text. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #06 (Notes #06 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). HW Assignment #5 is available through this hyperlink. These problem are due Thursday, Oct. 16.

Week 7: Policy change: HW will be due by 4 PM on Thursday to have more people attending lecture on Wednesday. Read Chapter 4.3 (Numerical integration), 4.4 (Composite numerical integration) from the text. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #07 (Notes #07 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). Solutions to HW Assignment #2 are available through this hyperlink. There is a zipped file with .pdf solutions, MatLab codes, and .tex files. Solutions to HW Assignment #3 are available through this hyperlink. HW Assignment #6 is available through this hyperlink. These problem are due Thursday, Oct. 23 .

Week 8: There is a Take-Home Exam available, which will be due at the beginning of class-time on Monday, Oct. 27. Next week there is an Exam, which will happen in GMCS 422 from 2-3:15 PM on Wed. Oct. 29. The Mid-term Exam will be open book and open notes. The problems will be very similar to the ones on the Take-Home Exam, and you will be able to use the computers in GMCS 422 to modify and execute any programs that you have brought with you. This week we continue numerical integration techniques Chapter 4.5-4.7. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #08 (Notes #08 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #09 (Notes #09 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). Solutions to HW Assignment #4 are available through this hyperlink. Solutions to the Take-Home Exam are now available through this hyperlink.

Week 10: HW Assignment #7 is available through this hyperlink. These problem are due Monday, Nov. 17.

Week 11: There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #10 (Notes #10 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color) and Lecture Notes #11 (Notes #11 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). The HW Assignment #7 has a new due date of Monday, Nov. 17.

There was extensive cheating on the Take-Home Exam, requiring me to invest over 5 additional grading hours to document and regrade these exams. (Needless to say, I don't like wasting that amount of time because of students violating University code!) This also hurts the honest students as I could not grade their in-class exams yet.
Revised Policy: If any students are caught copying any part of a HW Assignment or any part of the next Take-Home Exam for the remainder of the semester, then that student will receive a 0 on that assignment or the Take-Home Exam. In addition, a letter will be sent to the Dean of Academic Affairs notifying them of the incident. You can check with University policy, but I'm fairly certain that a second violation on record with the Dean of Academic Affairs results in expulsion from the University.

Week 12: The HW Assignment #8 is posted and has a due date of Tuesday, Dec. 2. There are lecture notes posted Lecture Notes #12 (Notes #12 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color) and Lecture Notes #13 (Notes #13 4 Panel BW and 4 Panel Color). . There is a class ranking with approximate grades at this time. There are solutions available for the Midterm Exam.
