Math 636 - Project Information

On Friday, Dec. 14, starting at 2 PM, we will begin the project presentations. The presentations will be in GMCS 418. The Projects will account for 20% of your grade. The oral presentation is graded by your peers and accounts for 1/3 of the project grade. The written part of the project is due Saturday, Dec. 15 (under my office door) by 5 PM and is worth 2/3 of the project grade.

Students are expected to write a report on the project. The written report that should be approximately 20 pages (including graphics, but programs and other appendices are outside the 20 pages). The written part of the project should have:

  1. Background material on the literature and significance of the project.
  2. Development of the mathematical model or a survey of a collection of relevant models.
  3. Discussion on the relevant mathematical theory that applies.
  4. Some original work on your own for either extending the model or performing simulations.
  5. Discussion and conclusions to summarize your work.

Student Ordering of Projects

The oral presentations should be 18-20 minutes long. We will have a few minutes for questions, then the next speaker will start. If everyone stays on time (part of the grade on your presentation), then the schedule below will certainly cover the class. The ordering was chosen by a number number generator. You can negotiate with someone else to move your position, but please let me know of any planned changes. I'm hoping that each time slot will actually be less than 25 min, so we finish well before 6 PM.
